The Woman in Kenzo The Musical
Kaleidoscopic scenes of the time resemble a movie, in which story who are you
Hong Kong in the 1970s is at a time of economic takeoff, and the entire world is Mary Chin’s runway. During working days, Mary Chin, who works in Central, devises strategies for her company. After work, she savours a glass of red wine in Chin Chin Bar and during the weekend, she gossips all day with her besties in Hilton. For the long holidays, she travels to New York and strolls along Fifth Avenue. Mary Chin, proud of her own taste and unique attitude, will not downgrade to accept the mediocre lifestyle and ordinary love relationships. Embracing their career and their fantastic taste of living, Mary and her three besties imagine that a fairytale ending is waiting for them.
However, time flies and they start to feel insecure. Mary’s boyfriend is not perfect enough, Martha still cannot find her Mr Right, Mimi falls in love with the wrong person, and Jan is not willing to stay for anyone. Some of them encounter, and some of them depart. At the crossroad of life, they wonder which direction could lead them to a glamorous future.
The Woman in Kenzo is a viral serialized novel in the City Magazine by the famous writer Peter Dunn Siu-yue who tells the story in the form of an autobiography in the heroine Mary Chin’s first-person perspective. The same-named musical is the adaptation from the novel by the celebrated creative team: Leon Ko, Chris Shum and Roy Szeto. After the public read-through in 2013, Chung Ying presents the first full-length theatre performance of this musical classic.
