In Greek mythology, Prometheus, the god of foresight, due to his love for humanity, in spite of knowing he would be severely punished, steals fire from the gods and gives it to mankind teaching them civilization and technology. To punish Prometheus, Zeus chains him to the cliffs in Caucasus and sentences him with eternal torment. Regardless of Might and Violence’s humiliation, Oceanus River and the sea nymphs’ persuasion, and Zeus’s messenger Hermes’ provocation, Prometheus believes that all suffering would end one day, and he prophesies to the mortal Io, who is also suffering, that Zeus would be overthrown……
 
Prometheus Bound was originally the first play in a trilogy, but the other two plays, Prometheus Unbound and Prometheus the Fire-Bringer, survive only in fragments. Prometheus Bound tells that Prometheus is brought to the mountain in Caucasus to receive punishment, various gods take turn to persuade him to surrender to Zeus, but Prometheus stands firm and predicts the fate of the world, eventually he is plunged into the abyss by the furious Zeus. Although the play has a simple plot and is mainly formed by dialogues, it has intense conflict, showing the magnificent and solemn characteristics of early Greek tragedy.
