Artocrite Theater
Our Origin
Artocrite Theatre, formed by six graduates of the School of Drama of The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts in 2010, began receiving public awareness in 2020. Under the Inland Revenue Ordinance section 88, the theatre runs as a non-profit-making charity organization and had received various subsidies from the Hong Kong Arts Development Council and presented by Leisure and Cultural Services Department.
In 2016, the company gained wide public and industrial recognition and appreciation when An Angel Dumped into New City, a joint production with The Whole Theatre Limited, won five awards at the 25th Hong Kong Drama Awards.
From 2016 to 2019, the “Awakening Series” trilogy Sin, The Truth from Liar and Eve had received several awards and nominations at the 26th and 29th Hong Kong Drama Awards, the 9th and 12th Hong Kong Theatre Libre Awards, and the 2016 IATC (HK) Critics’ Awards.
The company launched its first overseas performances at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in the United Kingdom and Seoul, South Korea in 2017–18. My Subway Journey with Sailor Moon was a joint production of artists from Hong Kong, Japan and Seoul, and was widely reported by the local media when it was premiered at the Namsan Arts Centre.
Incorporated in 2020, Artocrite Theatre is now a full-time and professional company aspiring to share its beliefs and productions with a wider audience in the community.
Our Belief and Artistic Mission
We are not righteous in the eye of the secular world. There is no absolute justice or evil on our stand. We refuse to be hypocrites. We offer our authenticity to be appreciated at a distance and up close; even be teased. Through our works, the audience are encouraged to share their thoughts, ask questions and reflect in tandem.
With antinomy as the axis of creation, our works focus on the relationship between contradictions and symbiosis in the world through the study of the dark side of human nature. Reverse thinking paves the way to our quest for the spirit of truth and virtue. Instead of searching for the absolute truth in theatre, audiences are invited into multiple dimensions of contemplation in the process of questioning.
Our aesthetic direction opts to envelop four key elements – colour, sex, nudity, violence – with black humour. Through intense visual simulation in forms of physical theatre, multimedia and stage effects, tacit, unsaid realities are exposed before the eyes of the audience.
Creating on stage, expanding online, and exchanging in Asia
Our envisioned development is in three streams. Firstly, stage performance remains our focus in elevating the local artistic standard and promoting further development. Secondly, expanding into younger audiences by launching and promoting quality and exceptional works on online platforms. Thirdly, through previous cultural exchange experiences, to expand the market and diversity by building regional connections and developing joint productions with further exchange and touring opportunities in establishing a performing arts network in Asia.
