Theatre Horizon
COMPANY HISTORY
Theatre Horizon is a professional theatre company in Hong Kong. Founded in 2006 by theatre veteran Chan Chu-hei, who has been Artistic Director of the company since its establishment, it is one of the few theatre companies in Hong Kong with a focus on performance research, investigating different performance systems and dramatic styles, and the theories and concepts involved. It works with the belief that theatre mirrors life and society. In the vastness of the realm of theatre, it aims to explore all possibilities in theatre performance. Director Chan Chu-hei was awarded Best Director by the 4th Hong Kong Theatre Libre. Au Bord de la Vie was awarded Best Overall Performance.
COMPANY PROSPECT
Theatre Horizon believes that Art should be like air, water and earth that common folks can enjoy. We will continue to let theatre be like a mirror to our lives, making work that communicates with and gives pleasure to the common people.
We also believe that Theatre can change the world and make it better and more beautiful. We insist that a theatre work, apart from gratifying senses, should be able to stimulate the mind of the audience who would reflect on life and society after experiencing the work. And for this, Theatre Horizon will continue to produce thought provoking theatre work.
At the same time, Theatre Horizon will continue to take up responsibilities to train the younger generation of professional theatre practitioners. With the 'World Theatre Workshop Series' and other innovative projects, Theatre Horizon will collaborate with experienced theatre artists from Hong Kong and other parts of the world to guide the young artists to search for their own artistic directions.
In recent years, Hong Kong has seen many theatre productions. There have been quite a lot of training programmes for aspiring local playwrights and actors and yet there were not enough new directors to cope with the rapid development. Theatre Horizon saw this and launched the 'Walking with Up-and-coming Directors Scheme' and the 'New Directors' Movement'. The former gives local theatre professional actors and directors a chance to participate theatre productions of different styles and nature, the latter provides a practical platform for new directors to work with a theatre classic and present it on the stage of a medium-sized theatre.
