Book of Mountains and Seas – The Fates of Mountains and Rivers
A physical theatre exploration of a fantastical pre-cultural world and the origins of the universe
This October, WestK and Théâtre de la Feuille present a work-in-progress physical theatre production inspired by the Chinese classic, The Book of Mountains and Seas.
Through physical expression and a blend of Eastern and Western performance traditions, the production leads the audience on an imaginative exploration of the origins of the universe and the nature of existence in real and mythical worlds.
The original text is a fantastical account of pre-Qin China that weaves geography, mythology, travelogues and shamanic texts with tales of strange happenings and mythical creatures, and legends from around the world. Over the centuries, there has been much speculation about the identity of the author of this anonymous historical work. Théâtre de la Feuille’s production is also a contemporary quest to find the nameless chronicler of a magical pre-cultural world and its fantastical creatures.
This programme is co-presented and co-produced by WestK and Théâtre de la Feuille, and is part of the WestK Creators series.
