CHEUNG Ngar-lai Annie
Annie Cheung Ngar Lai is a Hong Kong actress. Currently the Associate Professor of Practice at the Academy of Film of the Hong Kong Baptist University. A former full-time actress at the Hong Kong Repertory Theatre and a former artiste at HKTV with over 40 credits in theatre and screen productions. Nominated for the Best Supporting Actress at the 22nd Hong Kong Drama Awards for her performance as Mrs. Muller in Doubt: A Parable.
In 2018, Annie’s first solo performance DOTS was premiered at Camden Fringe in London. This is a Self-Revelatory performance, a unique genre merging drama therapy and theatre. Due to rave reviews, she was invited to do a re-run at The Actors Centre in London in 2019. In May 2021, she was invited by Singapore Drama Educators Association to share her London performance online at the SDEA Theatre Arts Conference, an international annual event attended by leading theatre practitioners and drama educators from all over the world. In June 2021, DOTS was selected to be featured in NuWorks 2021, an online theatre festival launched by Pan Asian Repertory Theatre, an award-winning Off-Broadway theatre company in New York. In May 2022, upon the invitation by The University of British Colombia, she staged an extended version of DOTS in Vancouver, both in English and in Cantonese.
In her early years, Annie obtained her first degree in law at The University of Hong Kong. Later she studied drama at The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts. Graduated in 2010 with numerous outstanding student/actor awards and scholarships including the prestigious Leslie Cheung Memorial Scholarship (Outstanding Award), she began her acting career as a freelance actress and worked with numerous theatre companies. During 2012-2014, Annie joined HKTV as their artiste. In 2014-2020, she joined The Hong Kong Repertory Theatre as a full-time actress. In 2017-2018, with the generous support of the Sir Robert Black Trust Fund Postgraduate Scholarship, she obtained her master degree in performance (acting) with distinction from Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts (UK). In 2021, she played the leading role of Dr. Rieux in The Plague, a play produced by the Hong Kong Arts Festival.
Over the years, Annie played numerous leading or major supporting roles in renowned plays written by local as well as overseas playwrights, showcasing her versatility as an actress, such as the female lead acting the mother/daughter/granddaughter in The Big Meal, the lost actress Theresa in Circle Mirror Transformation, the magistrate Hesther Saloman in Equus, the young Cantonese opera singer in Footprints in the Snow, the new immigrant prostitute in The Crumbled and the 1940s Shanghai socialite in The Twin Spirit (Re-run). As a singer-actress, Annie performed in musicals as well such as playing the widow Irene Molloy in the classic Broadway musical Hello, Dolly!.
