Rooftop Productions was founded in 2014 in Hong Kong by Michelle Li (a local Hongkonger) and Ivor Houlker (from the UK). We make original theatre works which are influenced by pressing social and cultural issues in Hong Kong at the moment. We work in a multidisciplinary way, integrating different aspects of theatre in our creative process; we frequently use devising techniques, using everything from live music to live video and even live interaction with mobile apps. Rooftop’s works have been well received by local and international audiences, being nominated and awarded multiple times in different Hong Kong theatre awards.
 
In 2022, our founders received the Hong Kong Arts Development Awards - Award for Young Artist (Drama). Our recent work, Songs of Innocence and Experience, is awarded ‘Outstanding Production of the Year’, ‘Best Original Music (Drama)’ in the 33rd Hong Kong Drama Awards, and ‘Scenography of the Year’ at the IATC (HK) Critics Awards 2024. Our documentary theatre work Testimony was awarded for ‘Performance of the Year’, ‘Scenography of the Year’ in  The 4th IATC (HK) Critics’ Award.  Our debut theatre work in Hong Kong, The Beautiful Ones, along with our song theatre work, Milk and Honey, The Furies Variations, and Testimony all won awards for ‘Outstanding Scenography,’ and our founders were nominated in the ‘Best Director’ category in The 8th, 9th, 11th and 12th Hong Kong Theatre Libre awards.  Our documentary theatre work Not The Maids was nominated for ‘Yearly Performance’ in  The 2nd IATC (HK) Critics’ Award, ‘Best Overall Performance’, ‘Best Director’ and ‘Outstanding Scenography’ in The 10th Hong Kong Theatre Libre awards.
