Postcolonial Affairs of Food and the Heart
If your decision about what to eat arises from your own desires and not external forces, then you are truly independent. In 2016, Chan Ping Chiu’s revisiting of earlier work became the continuation of a Ya Si novel, where old characters intermingled with new ones. Today, when the situation is even more uncertain, decisions about food, drink and life feel like a return to the floating uncertainties of pre-1997 colonial times. The robust, lively Oi Mei Lai, still imbued with the Can Do spirit of a Hong Kong-style tea house, has a fateful encounter with a “gweilo” (foreigner), and experiences the ups and downs of Hong Kong. Years after a passionate love affair, prodigal son Stephen holds a lightly chilled glass of red wine and ponders the loneliness and desolation of post-colonial / re-colonized life. Meanwhile, the rebellious disciple of the God of Food, Siu Suet, comes back after many years to reclaim the ‘Classic of Food’, only to find that while the setting is the same, the people are completely different. The God of Food symbolises happiness and enjoyment, as well as an inner complex longing for the warmth and care of a community. He becomes a good memory for each individual, a comforting balm for the solitude of dinner time.
