Yip’s singing career was launched after band leader Mr. Vic Cristobal invited her to collaborate in the sixties. In 1981, her first Cantonese album "Star" was released, which included Mr. James Wong’s Star, soon to be her signature song. The songs Tired and You Keep Me Here, by record producer Mr. Joseph Chan, are also fan favourites.
In 1999, the hit song Teach me how not to love him (performed as a duet with Mr. Andy Hui) introduced a younger generation of fans to her musical artistry. Under the leadership of music director Mr. Anthony Lun Wing Leung, she gave three solo concerts at the Hung Hom Stadium in Hong Kong in 2002, 2005 and 2013. In 2016, she also joined Mr. Lun, Mr. Chiu Tsang Hei and the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra for an outstanding performance at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre.
Since the seventies, she has also been involved in Hong Kong film and television. Ever since she and Mr. Andy Lau played a mother and child in the TV series The Emissary to great popular acclaim, they have collaborated in many movies, including The Unwritten Law, Dances with Dragon and A Simple Life, all critical and commercial successes. The movie A Simple Life, directed by Ann Hui, won many international awards, including the Best Actress Award at the Venice Film Festival. She collaborated with Director Hui again in Our Time Will Come, which won Yip her third “Best Supporting Actress award” in the Hong Kong Film Awards.
She made her stage debut in 2019 - 2020 with The Beauty Queen of Leenane at the Shouson Theatre, Hong Kong Arts Centre, where she starred alongside Ms. Louisa So Yuk Wah, Mr. Poon Chan Leung and Mr. Ling Man Lung. The thirty performances were greeted with rapturous applause.
Yip is also socially engaged. A Hong Kong born and bred artist, she loves Hong Kong deeply and hopes to be able to walk alongside the people of Hong Kong outside the realm of art.
