POON Chan-leung
A stage, TV and film actor born and bred in Hong Kong.
Graduated 1991 from the School of Drama in the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, where he majored in acting.
Poon joined the Hong Kong Repertory Theatre straight after graduation and stayed as a full-time actor for 21 years. In 2012, he was invited to be an associate artist of the theatre. Over the years, he has collaborated with local, Chinese and foreign directors and artists on countless occasions, and has acted in more than a hundred plays. Important works include The Mad Phoenix early in his career where he played Tong Dik-sang, and Secret Love in Peach Blossom Land where he played Chiang Pin-Liu Liu. More recently he has appeared as Michael in The Truth, the professor in The Professor, patient 5B in A Dream like a Dream, Gelen in My Very Short Marriage, and as the title character in Hu Xueyan, my Dear which toured Beijing, Shanghai, Tianjin, Guangzhou, and Shenzhen. In 2010 he wrote the script for An Ordinary Man, which he subsequently directed at the 39th Hong Kong Arts Festival.
Notable TV roles include Master Hill in HKTV's To Be Or Not to Be, as well as Chiu Tze-Lung in the inaugural TV series for ViuTV's Margaret & David - Green Beans.
Film appearances include The Mad Phoenix, The Umbrella Story, Love a la Zen, Weeds on Fire, Pseudo Secular, The Moment, Men on the Dragon, Beyond the Dream, and Blindness.
In 2012 he was named Outstanding Artist of the Year (Drama) by the Hong Kong Arts Development Council. Over the years he has been nominated 16 times for the Hong Kong Federation of Drama Societies' Hong Kong Drama Awards, where he won Best Actor in 2013, 2014 and 2017 for Rabbit Hole, The Professor and Hu Xueyan, my Dear respectively. He won Best Supporting Actor awards in 1995, 2005 and 2011. In 2005, he was awarded the Lee Hysan Scholarship by the Asia Cultural Council and went to New York for further studies.
In 1997 and 1998, he was nominated for Best Supporting Actor in the 34th Taiwan Golden Horse Awards and the 17th Hong Kong Film Awards for his role as Tong Dik Sang in the film The Mad Phoenix.
In 2019, he was nominated for Best Supporting Actor in the 38th Hong Kong Film Awards for his role as Wong Suk Yee in the film Men on the Dragon.
Together with Louisa So and Harry Chi-wai Cheung, he established Project Roundabout, and is one of the conveners for their three-year plan.
